Job Description
Johnson & Johnson is seeking a highly skilled analytical scientist to support pharmaceutical analytical method development, advanced testing, and scientific investigations at its Mumbai R&D center and associated contract development and manufacturing organizations (CDMOs) in India.
The selected candidate will provide scientific leadership in mass spectrometry applications, particularly in nitrosamine testing, organic impurity identification, structural elucidation, extractables and leachables (E&L), and elemental impurity assessments.
The role involves developing, optimizing, validating, and transferring analytical methods while ensuring compliance with applicable global regulatory requirements and pharmaceutical quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead advanced analytical testing and investigations at the Mumbai R&D center and associated external laboratories and CDMOs.
- Provide scientific expertise in mass spectrometry for nitrosamine testing, method development, and investigations.
- Perform organic impurity identification, structural elucidation, and extractables and leachables assessments.
- Support analytical method development, optimization, validation, and transfer for pharmaceutical products and materials.
- Conduct and support elemental impurity assessments using ICP-MS in line with applicable regulatory requirements.
- Interpret complex analytical data and prepare scientific protocols, technical reports, and regulatory documentation.
- Troubleshoot analytical methods and instruments, conduct root-cause investigations, and implement continuous improvements.
- Collaborate with R&D, Quality Control, Regulatory Affairs, Quality & Compliance, external contract laboratories, and CDMOs.
- Coordinate with analytical development teams in Mumbai and Belgium to support method transfer and pharmaceutical development activities.

Technical Skills Required
Candidates should have hands-on experience with advanced analytical instruments and techniques, including:
- High-resolution and low-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS).

- Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS).
- Laser diffraction and particle characterization.
- Microscopy and particle morphology assessment.
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), including quantitative NMR (qNMR).
Educational Qualification
A Ph.D. in one of the following fields is required:

Required Experience and Competencies
- 7–8 years of relevant professional experience.
- In-depth knowledge of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and drug product (DP) development.
- Experience working in a current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) environment.
- Knowledge of regulatory requirements supporting clinical studies and NDA/MAA submissions.
- Understanding of nitrosamine, extractables and leachables, and elemental impurity guidance, including ICH M7 and applicable USP chapters.
